The 92nd Regiment, Gordon Highlanders - The best there ever was:
The Regiment has a long and distinguished history and is probably the best known regiment of Scotland. Raised by the Duke and Duchess of Gordon in 1798 they were originally the 100th Regiment but changed in 1798 to the 92nd. They saw service in Egypt, Corruna, Peninsula, Waterloo, Afganistan and South Africa. The Gordons saw 21 Battalions raised in WWI with 1000 officers and 28,000 men. Their no famous charge at Waterloo in the stirrups of the Scots Greys is legendary and subject to main paintings and stories.
The Regiment was actually raised by the Duchess and her daughter who were both very attractive women. They rode from town to town offering a shilling and a kiss to those who joined. They quickly met their targets.
The Spirit of the Unit has many stories to tell and many battles but none so moving as Piper George Lindlater who whilst leading a charge in India was shot through both feet but doggedly continued to play and inspire the troops on until the battle was won. For this he received the Victoria Cross.
Their Motto "The Best there ever was" is apt and subject to many books and documents. The Prince of Wales was their Colonel in Chief until its amalgamation of Scottish Regiments in 1994 they have again amalgamated in 2006 as the Royal Regiment of Scotland.
The Goron Highlanders Museum is situated at St Lukes, Viewfield Rd Aberdeen
