Information > All things Gordon
The Gordons have always had something to do with Whisky and Alcohol ( Note its without the 'E' thats Irish whiskey) It was the Lords of the estates duty to hunt down "bootleggers" or illegal whisky stills. This was an almost impossible task and it was George Gordon, the 5th Duke of Gordon who brought it all to a legal end as he proposed and sponsored an act of Parliament to make Distilleries Legal.
In 1824 he organised for Parliament to pass a law that distilleries could operate at a Licence cost of ten pound a year. The First legal distillery was Glenlivet run by George Smith, a nephew of John Gordon who was cousin of the Duke. The Duke gave the land to smith at Glenlivet in 1858 and it has been a success ever since turning out millions of gallons of Whisky every year except one during WWII.
Here are an array of Alcohols that were invented by or based on the Clan.
COCK OF THE NORTH WHISKY LIQUEUR: Today the Marquis of Huntly and his son The Earl of Aboyne produce their own products, a single malt Whisky called "Speyside" a 12 year old blended whisky. They also make another called "Cu Dhub" ( Black Dog) marketed as Whisky with bite from the black heart of the forest of Gaick. But behind the "Coo Cathedral", the Old Cow shed now a magic 300 person convention centre is the workings where "Cock of the North Whisky Liqueur" is made. It has a secret recipe only known to the Marquis and his son and is made on Blaeberries, '"Fraochan" in Gaelic found growing among the heather, they have been used for centuries as a jelly with whisky known as 'housebrew' and supposedly have some healing properties. Further information can be obtained from their website info@ cockof the north.com
GLENLIVET WHISKY: This was the first Legal distillery and the longest running one. The decision to legalise was not popular with smugglers and bootleggers as they could no longer control the price. They tried to close the distilleries and they were defended by arms given by John Gordon or the Duke. They can be seen in the entrace way of the distillery. Based at Josie wells they make a range up to 25 years old as well as Chivas Regal and Royal Salute Whisky. Now owned by Pernod Ricard and Diagio.
