GORDONS IN IRELAND:
The surname is recorded in all provinces and dates from the 14th Century when Scottish Mercenaries known as Gallowglass soldiers went to assist Hugh O'Neil the Earl of Tyrone to assist the Cathlic cause. He surrended in 1603 but they were already entrenched and stayed on. The Gaelic names include MacMhuirneachain, MacGurnaghan and Morbhoirneach, especially in Connaught and Ulster and Donegal in 1614. in 1796 three gordons applied for grants in County Mayo to grow crops. There were numerous others across the Country.
