DNA is the new tool in the genealogist kit and is becoming a useful and reliable way to track down relatives and ancestors. The genetic tests can determine relationships with a 99.9% accuracy The Family Tree DNA is divided into separate Family projects. The Gordon DNA also covers the Swinton and Douglas Family as well as the Septs as there will be blood relations with most of them.

How it works! The Male genes mutate ever so slightly over 20 generations so I would have the same DNA as my father and his father etc. There are some exceptions but it will still be very very close. We all have a total of 67 markers in our chromosonal makeup with the Y-DNA deciding the sex. The tests as thus divided into four categories the first 12 markers tell us you are in fact of that family, 25 markers tell us which branch you fall into and 37 markers refines it to which twig. The 67 markers does further refinement and matches us to others by narrowing it even more.

The test is simple three vials with a scapper, we scrape the inside of our cheek for three mintes at 3 hourly intervals and after each scrapping place it in the vial. Label it and send it off. They do the rest and match you up with all the other Gordon people. You can then go on line and see where you fit in relation to all the others who have been tested. They also put you in touch with all matches and close matches so you can compare notes and find common ancestors.
