The Gordon setter is the hunter of the setter family bred for the grouse moors where he is a powerful and untiring worker some estimate that during the course of a normal days shooting he could comfortably cover as much as 50 miles a day. A strong and intelligent dog who needs firm handling. Thebreed standard describes his appearance as " a stylish dog with galloping lines". The Gordon setter will always be associated with the Dukes of Gordon. The first of the breed to become the Gordon Setter was obtained by the 4th Duke from the Earl of Leicester and was first classed as a Black and Tan in 1924. he was reclassified as a Gordon Setter and traced back to the Gordon Castle strain. Ideally the dog will stand about 66c, at the withers and weigh about 65 lb. his coast should be smooth and flat with extensive feathering in the adult. He will be of an intense black rich and glowing with deep chestnut markings. The bred is loving, friendly, loyal, affectionate and sociable, always alert and very sensible with a very distinquished look the way they stand.
