The Gordons now have 157 identified branches on the tree. The Irish Gordons came about in the 14th Century when "gallowglass" soldiers went to Ireland to assist the Catholic cause and stayed. their spellings include Gordan, Gorden and Gordun.
There are still Gordons in France and Spain. The Spanish Gordons are descended from the Wardhouse Gordons and started the larged Brandy and Sherry company in the world now known as Gonzalez Byez. There are Gordon across Europe and Russia. Like many families during the clearances, epedemics and industrialisation they were forced to immigrate. Many went to America as the fare was cheaper and the journey shorter. Many also came to Australia and New Zealand. In those days it was a three month crossing and cost about 14 pounds. There were several types of immigration passengers -" Free", paid for by the government, Assisted passengers - part payment by the government, Unassisted passenger paid for by thye passenger, Bounty - paid for by an agent who claimed the money back from the Government and Nominated passengers - paid for by friends and relatives in Australia.
