David Gordon.A,M. was born in 1899 and became a horticulturalist in Queensland and with his wife Dorothy they started a magnificent garden and story. The planted 90 acres of what is now Myall Botanic Garden Park at Glenmorgan. As Early as 1940 David was experimenting with various grevilleas and began creating hybrids. He kept the most detailed diaries and records which have now been used as far away as Kew Gardens. He even had a Herbarium with 5000 species. Dorothy became famous in her own right as an artist and water colourist painting the wildflowers from their garden. Dave relished her work and encouraged everyone. Family holidays were plant hunting expeditions for the park. Daves dream was to one day create his own plant species especially with his grevilleas.
His work was rewarded as in 1960 he discovered a new seedling but sadly his daughter Robyn was diagnosed with an incurable cancer in 1968 so he named the seedling after his daughter "Robyn Gordon". He discovered other seedlings and named them after his other daughters, "Sandra and Merinda." Today the plants are a household name and among the prettiest in any garden, their spiderlike flowers in pretty red and yellow are magnificent. Sadly Robyn passed away in 1969 just 16 years old and Dorothy in 1985.
David lived to be 100 and died in 2001. I believe the Gordon spirit to achieve was at work here. The legacy goes on as the Garden is now open to the public and can be visited at myallparkbotanicgarden.org.au
